Privacy Policy
Effective Date: 05/07/2026
This Privacy Policy describes how the Chrome extension
BestQ Recorder handles user data.
1. Overview
BestQ Recorder is a browser extension that lets users record their screen,
capture screenshots, and report bugs. Alongside the recording, it can capture
technical context such as console logs and network activity of the recorded tab,
so that developers receiving the report can reproduce and fix issues faster.
2. Data Collection
The Extension only captures data while a recording or screenshot is actively
in progress, and only after the user explicitly starts it. No background
recording or data collection ever occurs.
When the user starts a recording or takes a screenshot, the Extension may capture:
- Screen or tab video (and microphone audio, only if the user enables it)
- Screenshots of the selected tab or area
- Console logs of the recorded tab during the recording
- Network request metadata (URLs, status codes, timings) of the recorded tab during the recording
- Basic environment details (browser version, operating system, page URL) to aid debugging
- User account details (name, email) used to sign in and attribute recordings
3. How Data is Used
Captured data is used solely for the following purposes:
- Creating the screen recording or screenshot the user requested
- Attaching technical context (logs, network activity) to bug reports
- Uploading the recording to the user's BestQ workspace so it can be shared with teammates
- Remembering user preferences (e.g., recording quality, microphone choice) locally in the browser
All captures start only when explicitly initiated by the user
(e.g., clicking "Start Recording" or "Take Screenshot") and stop when the user ends them.
4. Permissions Usage
-
Storage: Persists user preferences (quality, microphone settings)
and temporarily buffers recording data locally before upload.
-
Tab Capture / Desktop Capture / Offscreen: Used to record the
screen, window, or tab the user selects.
-
Tabs / Active Tab / Windows / Scripting: Used to display the
recording toolbar and screenshot selector on the page the user is recording.
-
Debugger / Web Request / Web Navigation: Used only during an
active recording to capture console logs and network activity of the recorded tab
for bug-report context. Detached as soon as the recording stops.
-
Downloads: Allows users to save recordings and screenshots
to their own device.
-
Host Permissions (all URLs): Required so the user can record and
report bugs on any website they choose. The Extension never reads or modifies page
content outside of an active, user-initiated capture.
5. Data Sharing
Recordings and their attached context are uploaded only to the BestQ platform,
and only when the user completes a recording. They are accessible to the user
and the teammates the user chooses to share them with.
The Extension does not sell user data, does not share data with advertisers,
and does not transmit data to any unrelated third parties.
6. User Control
- Recording starts and stops only on explicit user action
- Microphone capture is optional and off unless the user enables it
- Users can cancel or discard a recording before it is uploaded
- Users can delete their recordings from the BestQ platform at any time
- No data is captured while the Extension is idle
7. Data Security
Recording data is buffered locally in the browser during capture and transmitted
to the BestQ platform over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Access to uploaded
recordings requires authentication, and recordings are only visible to the
user's workspace.
8. Data Retention
Local recording buffers are cleared from the browser once the upload completes
or the recording is discarded. Uploaded recordings remain on the BestQ platform
until deleted by the user or their workspace administrator.
